This video was made a few years ago, in March of 2016. Here I sand, stain and apply a coating to a garden set originally purchased from Ikea. We've since moved to a place that lacks a balcony, but we actually still use this table as our (very petite) kitchen dinner table, with a glass top we had made for it.

I am re-uploading some videos for preservation and, hopefully, your enjoyment.

This video was originally made and uploaded around October 2017. I had purchased the Speed Box S in an attempt to reduce the very noticeable hum that comes from Pro-Ject's record player motor. As an added bonus it would, as the product name implies, also be easier for me to put on a 45rpm record, as it saves me from having to physically move the rubber band. Fortunately it achieved both, reducing the hum substantially. It's virtually silent now at 33rpm and much softer than it was before at 45rpm.

The video is a bit longer as I experimented with narration (a first for me), and included an unedited unboxing segment as I kind of enjoyed the soft sounds. It has an ASMR-esque feel to it.

Note: I purchased the Speed Box S with my own money. This video is not sponsored by anyone or anything.

This video was originally made and uploaded in February 2017. I love the movie Lala Land and when they announced a limited edition blue LP of its soundtrack, I had to get it. As a sort of thank you to the movie, as-well as to share the joy that is listening to music you can physically hold in your hands, I made this video to give a little back.

If you haven't watched it already, I highly recommend you watch Lala Land. Even if, like myself, you are usually not at all into musicals or musical-like things, it is a fantastic and very well done movie. Give it a try, it's worth it.

Naturally I decided to grab the camera and record the process, not to show you exactly how it's done, but to capture the “journey”, the possible (probably.) mistakes made, and ultimately how difficult it really is (it isn't, fortunately). And just for a bit of fun, really.

I thought it would be nice to turn this video into a little more than just a capture of the solder bits, so I hope you'll sit back and enjoy this memory. There's no loud noises or background sounds, so you can keep playing your favorite tunes, or perhaps put on your headphones and enjoy the quiet sound effects.

The part number of the battery holder I used is S8421-45R, and I’m using the often used Panasonic branded CR2032 batteries.

I wanted to go even more lower powered (the plan is to have it running 24/7), so I got two L5630s. While the L5520 has a TDP of 60 Watts, the L5630 is 40 Watts, so quite an improvement.

I initially installed only one CPU, wanting to give that a try. I wasn't really enjoying the performance though, so I ended up deciding to add the second L5630. This would also let me add more RAM. The R510 came with only 8GB RAM, which depending on your needs might be enough, but it certainly was pushing it for what I want to do with the server. So I decided to, for the time being anyway, replace the 8GB (2x4GB) of registered PC3-10500R RAM with 8 4GB PC3-12800U (non-registered) RAM, giving the server a total of 32GB.

I also took the opportunity to install new network cables I got, as the ones I had been using up until that point were actually too short to fit comfortably. While the new cables are CAT.7, I don't need them to be, and only picked them because they were properly shielded and seemingly well built, as-well as the right length.

After these upgrades FreeNAS is noticeably snappier (or, less slow). I have yet to finish setting it up fully as there's a few more things I plan on setting up in jails, but so far I am very pleased with the R510. With both L5630s installed and all 12 drive bays filled with spinning disks, power consumption seems to hover around 200 watts. This went down with more recent upgrades that reduced the drive count to 8, with power consumption hovering around 165 watts. More on those updates in another post.

On the blog:

I have been exploring and learning about networks, servers and everything related in my free time to broaden my skillset and because it's an interesting topic to me. For many of these things I start off having no clue where to begin or what to do. While there are many great tutorials out there, I thought it might also be interesting to watch me as I (try to) figure things out, potentially learning what not to do from me in the process.

Hopefully these videos or series will result in whatever I set out to do to actually work, and if they do, I’ll make sure to accompany them with blog posts detailing the right steps to take to achieve a similar goal. These videos are not really meant as a tutorial you follow, but merely something you turn on (perhaps in the background) to get a general sense of things, then when it comes to actually implementing this yourself, the blog posts will hopefully be useful, and will let you read at your own pace.

Please let me know what you think. While I enjoy watching people learn or experiment with new things, I am not sure if there are other out there who enjoy this vlog-type talking-a-lot style videos. Please do let me know what your thoughts are, or if you have any suggestions, recommendations or other feedback.

Thank you, and enjoy :).

A small note; Unfortunately I had not thought of the vibrations my computer causes ending up in the recording, so there is a slight hum in the background. I apologize for this, I should've set up the microphone on a different surface. A shorter, kind of half-an-episode in the process of complicating my home network for the sake of learning things. Today we’re taking a short look at and moving some cables around, so that I can properly set up the VLANs I want, and also set up pfSense for my home office and lab side of the network.

If you enjoy watching someone fondle cables for a few minutes, this will be right up your alley. Otherwise, please understand as I slowly work through the footage I have recorded for your viewing pleasure. The next episode will actually get to some VLAN fiddling, pinky promise.

Some of these I originally missed out on, and some I am revisiting.

I recently found and bought a still sealed GTA trilogy box set, and since I love the GTA game series I had to get it. I hadn't been able to actually open the box set I had bought until today, and since I was having one of my signature Dave Tuesdays (a case of the Mondays usually hits me on a Tuesday, I don't know why) anyway, I figured I'd combine two of my hobbies/interests and make a short, slow and quiet unboxing video. It's not all too common to be able to open up a brand new PS2 game, so I wanted to do something a bit special for it.

If you, like me, have been meaning to get these games (again) in physical form, it might be good to see what's actually in this set too. I didn't know that these don't come with manuals, for example. A bit of a disappointing discovery to be honest. At least they still come with full-sized maps, so that's something, but if you're looking for the complete complete experience, it might be worthwhile to try to find individual copies instead.

Enjoy!</video:description><video:content_loc>https://cdn.video.davejansen.com/streaming-playlists/hls/b60ff288-b4cd-448f-8c0a-d587f2c71141/cd68b942-01ba-4dc9-88be-999434d46fe4-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/videos/embed/otWSu3vDxPfSRA7w2qGmuZ</video:player_loc><video:duration>505</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>21</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2023-11-14T04:08:42.464Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>PS2</video:tag><video:tag>Playstation 2</video:tag><video:tag>GTA</video:tag><video:tag>Grand Theft Auto</video:tag><video:tag>Trilogy Box Set</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.davejansen.com/c/gaming/videos">Gaming</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/w/uigqCL9fiCBxhvBABg9R6E</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/e5392bd9-064d-4b39-aecb-039268122b25.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time. I am trying out a new-to-me basic HDMI recorder I have ordered, and this is one of the first recordings I have made with it. I need to do more testing to get a better sense of this device and whether or not it is worth getting.

As this is such a wonderful game I thought I'd upload the first level I played through here. Both for others to see how this HDMI recorder performs, but also (and perhaps more-so) to potentially revive some memories of a classic beat-em-up game from the 90s that's just so much fun to play, especially together.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://cdn.video.davejansen.com/streaming-playlists/hls/e529084a-d266-4729-80f0-5ae06721c43c/33891402-615b-4c64-a078-183ae199c0c9-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/videos/embed/uigqCL9fiCBxhvBABg9R6E</video:player_loc><video:duration>224</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>15</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2023-11-14T04:11:34.314Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>Forever Lost</video:tag><video:tag>Foreverlost</video:tag><video:tag>Dave Jansen</video:tag><video:tag>davejansen</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.davejansen.com/c/gaming/videos">Gaming</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/w/fufZ7cauqQMQLpHf9VBteV</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/fb88a0fa-22af-4640-951b-267a53dc16b1.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Rare Street Fighter Doom WAD gameplay (Korean-made) (스트리트 파이터 둠)</video:title><video:description>A short recording of a rare Korean-made WAD for DOOM that transforms parts of the game into Street Fighter characters and weapons. It's only the shareware version, so it's quite short, and as far as mods go this one is very basic; only a few skins have been replaced as you can see.

https://davejansen.com/life-and-loss-watch-me-play/

Sometimes you need to give your mind a chance to really rest. To give your heart a chance to be distracted for a moment. To sit and play a game, or some other "doing nothing" equivalent.

Last year certainly asked a lot of me, having taken away something unmistakably irreplaceable. It's the kind of thing that leaves a large hole behind that will never get fully filled up again, but you'll have to try anyway.

It's something that I'm working on giving a "place," which certainly needs and deserves time. Some days are easier. Some days the quietness is deafeningly loud. This is something that will probably ring familiar to anyone who has experienced loss.

As silly as it may sound, that's what the Win Max helps me with, too. Not to replace or fill that void, but to help heal.

Something like that.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://cdn.video.davejansen.com/streaming-playlists/hls/eccaca12-398f-4f2a-a78c-9a8b2cdddc95/9a45883c-c3b5-4f79-bc01-4b07f7f033e6-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/videos/embed/veVH7dTWSagVBfk81KYW6K</video:player_loc><video:duration>422</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>32</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2023-11-14T04:13:06.854Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>GPD</video:tag><video:tag>Win Max</video:tag><video:tag>GPD Win Max</video:tag><video:tag>Linux</video:tag><video:tag>Manjaro</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.davejansen.com/c/dave/videos">Dave Jansen</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/w/83RNNJ56tudowcEd2GyzbX</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/fd660d5f-dd8c-4df0-9b25-5ed4bccbbbb0.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Forever Lost: The New Home</video:title><video:description>This video was originally made and uploaded in October 2017, right after we moved into our then-new home.

The process is easy enough, and this particular card is natively supported by macOS, so it works right away. The result is that I'm able to use my Mattias Laptop Pro and Apple Magic Touchpad 2 from boot —even in the Clover boot selector— as this card supports hardware pairing, as supposed to the software pairing that is usually used with those USB sticks.

One day I wanted to try to see if I could get something more out of it, so I (quite literally) duct-taped a Canon 18-55mm DSLR kit lens I had at the time to it. The results were surprisingly good, although it did make the camera only capable of _extreme_ close-ups as I did not have an intermediary lens to compensate, nor the ability to fine-tune the distance between the camera's sensor and this (much larger) lens.

Still, I quite enjoyed it at the time, and ended up (attempting to) record a few macro-style videos.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://cdn.video.davejansen.com/streaming-playlists/hls/f44357ea-2cab-4267-a08a-d77c987acaa5/cff9714f-ba64-40bf-9c92-24437596b2d8-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/videos/embed/war8NsYM2RwHFLg8aapoDB</video:player_loc><video:duration>170</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>4</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2023-11-23T02:58:30.408Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>nature</video:tag><video:tag>plants</video:tag><video:tag>close-up</video:tag><video:tag>macro</video:tag><video:tag>Korea</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.davejansen.com/c/dave/videos">Dave Jansen</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/w/xtydLMLPNz3DK2MZUrm324</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/6cffeffd-f6b4-4abd-bcd9-b23932d43936.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Snow — Forever Lost Archives</video:title><video:description>Back around 2008-2010 I had a cheap and small video camera. Enjoy the sound of wind, the chirping of some birds, and just the generally relaxed mood this beautiful area I'm fortunate enough to leave near brings.

Luckily for me it was a particularly nice morning.

The footage is de-interlaced and re-encoded from its original HDV 1080i raw format to H.264 1080@30p. Other than that, this is basically unedited footage; no color grading or anything else has been done to this. This is mostly a test for me to get a sense of what's coming out of this new-to-me camera "as-is" in a somewhat extreme scenario (facing the sun directly). Or at least "as-is" with how it was configured at the time of this recording, as this camera has a _ton_ of settings 😅.

I had met up with someone to sell something, though they ran into an issue with the bank and offered to trade with their headphones instead. I was never a big fan of Beats' headphones, but figured I could give them a try, if either my partner or I would like them enough we could keep them, or I could sell it.

This was at a Starbucks after meeting up with my partner, who gave it a first listen. As her head bopping would suggest, she was listening to quite a different genre, but when I watched her listening, I heard Nocturne's No.2 as if it was playing right then in that moment, and knew I had to add it to the video.

I believe I had a (non-smart-)phone at the time that could capture some slow-motion footage, which I used one day when in the subway in Seoul on my way home. It was winter and the view felt particularly "black and white," so to better convey how the view felt at the time I had also made the entire footage black and white, and I reversed the footage too. This small moment in time is set to Beirut's "Scenic World," from their album "Gulag Orkestar."

I wanted to make a short video celebrating the new home, and the fact that for the first time I was able to have my music setup in an actual living room, as my previous homes actually lacked an actual living room. Enjoy!

Captured using an Elgato Camlink, which seems to like to temporarily disappear whenever the input resolution changes rather than just updating its settings, which causes OBS to get all kinds of confused. But the VGA 1-in-2-out splitter that arrived today seems to work nicely, allowing me to play the game directly on the computer and the CRT whilst still being able to record the screen. Nice.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://cdn.video.davejansen.com/streaming-playlists/hls/3e1468a3-71a3-48dc-b74f-d498fbd5279f/d109fdbc-336b-4735-95a2-6493c1d1db2a-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://video.davejansen.com/videos/embed/8EBYYno6dBSLKDdPsKLZ5B</video:player_loc><video:duration>952</video:duration><video:rating>5</video:rating><video:view_count>32</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-07-18T08:42:44.486Z</video:publication_date><video:tag>Windows 98</video:tag><video:tag>Star Trek</video:tag><video:tag>Hidden Evil</video:tag><video:tag>Pentium 3</video:tag><video:tag>Retro Gaming</video:tag><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://video.davejansen.com/c/gaming/videos">Gaming</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/c/dave/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/c/gaming/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/c/learnwithme/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/c/music/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://video.davejansen.com/a/i.am/video-channels</loc></url></urlset>
